Corrosion inhibitors & flow assurance for geothermal projects

A new frontier, geothermal presents unique challenges that cannot be solved with conventional technologies. Geothermal fluids (or brines) often contain high concentrations of salt, toxic minerals, and dissolved gasses like carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide.

Combined with high temperatures, extreme pressure and flow rates up to eight times higher than the flow rates encountered in the average oil well, these brines create a uniquely toxic environment that rapidly degrades equipment -- and inhibits the productivity of geothermal wells.

With over 40 years of experience developing bespoke production chemicals for the energy industry, Roemex are ideally placed to support geothermal projects seeking to maximise operational efficiency.

Working in conjunction with Leeds University’s Institute for Functional Services (iFS), we develop specially engineered chemical solutions to mitigate corrosion, prevent scale formation and/or maintain optimal flow in geothermal power plants. We also deploy specialist teams to monitor and manage ongoing flow or injectivity problems for geothermal clients across Europe.

Transforming Geothermal Operations

To safeguard the efficiency of geothermal operations, we design, produce and deploy solutions that address the following challenges:

CO2 Corrosion

High concentrations of free or dissolved CO2 are extremely corrosive in high-temperature and high-pressure environments. We have a proven methodology for inhibiting CO2 corrosion with long-lasting chemical solutions.

Mineral Scaling

Carbonate and sulphate scales are a common problem in geothermal environment and can significantly reduce the flow diameter of the tubes. We develop long-lasting chemical solutions that dissolve and inhibit the development of mineral scales.

Biofilm Formation

As bacteria build up in process equipment, they corrode pipelines and impact the overall efficiency of your geothermal operation. We can help you monitor and control biofilm development using a specialised, fast-acting biocide that targets microbial activity and breaks down into environmentally responsible by-products – safeguarding your system while supporting environmental compliance.

Heavy Metal Scaling

Geothermal brines often contain high concentrations of lead, copper or mercury. These metals can form scales through salt oversaturation or electrochemical reactions with tube walls, a process we can interrupt with carefully formulated treatments.

Bespoke Challenges

No two brines are the same. While we have developed reliable solutions for several common problems, we are always looking for opportunities to refine and expand our knowledge.

Deploying a Field-Proven Process

We have a proven methodology for the development of tailored corrosion inhibitors and flow assurance chemicals. Because we know that no two wells are alike, we always start by taking several samples of your brine, which we test against different chemicals in our on-site laboratory in Aberdeen.

Once we have identified your requirements and developed a full understanding of the challenges you face, we’ll create an implementation strategy covering expected performance, compatibility considerations and a practical workflow to deploy the chosen solution with minimal disruption.

Once you’ve signed off on your implementation strategy, our R&D team will begin adapting one or more of our purpose-built solutions to safeguard your equipment and protect the efficiency of your operation.

This approach applies equally whether your system is already online or seeking to minimise the risk of corrosion prior to the system start-up.

Once the chosen solution has been adapted for your system, we can proceed with on-site implementation and help you monitor results: optimising dose rates based on real-time field data from your wells.

For example, we routinely sample client brines to analyse ion and bacterial content, look for residual traces of inhibitor and monitor the effectiveness of our solution.

Building a Strong Track Record

We have built our reputation on our ability to work closely with our clients, providing a highly responsive service that’s both cost-efficient and highly effective.

We are a small but highly reactive team who prioritise efficiency and seek to build strong relationships that outlive the duration of individual geothermal projects. As an example, we were asked to help with a declining injection well on a Dutch project in 2019, and after remediating the problem, we are still involved with the project 6+ years later.

The project in question is still using the same product to inhibit corrosion and prevent scale. They are also using real-time data to evaluate and adjust the condition of their brine, working closely with our engineers to ensure that their plant is operating at peak efficiency.

We are also working on another 10 geothermal projects across the Netherlands, and projects in Germany and France.
