Supporting the global energy transition towards sustainable renewable energy, Roemex have used our expertise in upstream oil & gas to develop bespoke solutions for green energy worldwide.
Roemex have a range of chemicals designed specifically for the challenges of both the offshore wind and geothermal sectors, providing integrity management, corrosion control and flow assurance. It was recognised that although there were some similarities to conventional energy markets, the global renewables market both deserves and needs the same bespoke, tailored product that is 100% fit for purpose.
Our commitment is to ensure that the renewable energy industry is supported properly, with a bespoke solution for the long term. A commitment that can be demonstrable both from our unique product range & track record but also our long-term R&D programme, ensuring continually innovating and supporting the energy transition as it matures.
Roemex have developed a range of chemicals, monitoring, management & reporting services for the global deep geothermal market. This range consists of inhibitors for corrosion and scaling, but also remedial treatments designed to reduce injection pressures to improve or restore re-injectivity.
This range of inhibitors have been designed exclusively for the geothermal market.
Oilfield inhibitors are inherently unsuited to perform effectively in a water-based system. The composition of the chemical and the nature of the molecules within, not only under-perform technically but can cause significant problems in the system, which usually manifest themselves as a flow assurance issue. Common symptoms of which are blocked filters, an increase in injection pressure & reduction in flow rate.
Roemex have developed a range of green inhibitors, specifically designed for geothermal brines. These inhibitors control corrosion and if required carbonate and sulphate scaling, often with a combined or 2 in 1 product that utilises the existing injection line. Effective corrosion & scale control is essential for geothermal plants to be economically viable. Minimising production downtime and avoiding the significant cost of intervention to resolve an integrity or flow assurance failure.
The features of the Roemex GEOTECH range are:
Our background in providing Chemical Management Services (CMS) to our customers gives our customers a level of collaborative working and service quality that is globally renowned. Typically, we would provide this service completely free of charge.
Roemex, leveraging both our drilling & production flow assurance experience in upstream oil & gas have tailored existing chemistry to provide a bespoke solution to dissolve scale, organic and inorganic solids, drilling muds & “gunk”.
This can be applied to both subsurface and surface infrastructure.
Our remedial dissolver treatments are non-corrosive and are field proven in geothermal plants in Europe, to reduce injection pressure and restore flow rates to levels the plant experienced when newly commissioned.

Roemex proprietary corrosion inhibitor PROE-TEC™ has been used to protect ballast tanks, J-Tubes, Caissons, Jackets etc for 30+ years, without the need for any internal coating or paint or cathodic protection. Because of this, the cost to prevent corrosion is significantly lower.
TPROE-TEC™, has got extensive global track record both in Oil & Gas and Offshore wind. Over 200 deployments in oil and gas marine structures and 6 in offshore wind (PROE-TEC™). The product contains quaternary ammonium compounds which are excellent film forming corrosion inhibitors. The dissolved product forms an amine film on exposed metal surfaces, thus protecting it from corrosion and microbiological growth.
From an environmental aspect, the product is CEFAS Silver with Sub Warning for the UK. It also achieving the highest rating for Norway and Denmark waters, NEMS Yellow (Y0).
Methodology | Roemex PROE-TEC™ Range of Corrosion Inhibitors | 3 Pack Epoxy Paint / Norsok or equivalent marine / offshore standard | Wall Thickness Increase / Corrosion allowance |
---|---|---|---|
General Corrosion | Very effective against general corrosion. Product forms a chemically bonded corrosion resistant film to the steel. | Effective only if material is prepared properly and the paint is applied effectively | Metal will corrode but there will be enough metal to accommodate for corrosion losses |
MIC / Pitting / Bacterial Corrosion | Very effective against MIC. The PROE-TEC™ stops organic matter in the seawater from decaying and generating material that can cause MIC. | Not effective | Not effective |
H2S Control | By stopping the decay of the organic matter in the seawater hydrogen sulphide gas will not be generated. This gas is highly corrosive and fatal if inhaled (even in very small quantities) This should be considered when opening inspection hatches etc. | Not effective | Not effective |
Ease of application | PROE-TEC™ is available in liquid or solid form. The solid is supplied in a water-soluble wrapping and is installed inside the ballast tank at the fabrication yard. It will stay inside until flooding operations start. The liquid can be dosed into the seawater during flooding operations by using a small chemical injection skid. | Flat, plate steel cannot be painted. It must be rolled, welded etc then confined space working inside the ballast tank to apply paint. Areas around internal baffles etc are particularly difficult to coat effectively and can represent a corrosion risk in the future. Confined space working represents a multitude of risk to personnel | N/A |
Environmental | PROE-TEC™ can be discharged to sea. The relevant UK chemical regulator has classified the chemistry as Silver with Substitution Warning. And the Norwegian chemical regulator classifies as Yellow Y0. The highest classification of any product of this type. Furthermore, we have a track record of deployments globally. | Epoxy painting systems are known to have poor environmental credentials. Please refer to exact manufacture and paint type for more details | N/A with the exception of the CO2 Footprint of manufacturing and shipping more steel. |
Long Term | PROE-TEC™ does not hydrolyse when applied at 500ppm. Due to this the chemistry will remain active, providing corrosion protection for a minimum of 30 years. If assurances need to be made, samples of ballast water can be taken and sent to Roemex laboratory where we can determine the remaining activity level and give assurances the ballast tanks are still protected from corrosion | It is difficult to make any assurances to the long-term efficacy. In marine infrastructure, flaking, damaged paint or coatings is a common observation | If calculations are done correctly there should be enough wall thickness for the design life |
Re-treat / Re-apply | PROE-TEC™ can be topped up. If the structure is de-ballasted completely or partially, the volume of seawater can be easily retreated. | Not practical to be reapplied | N/A |
Commercial | PROE-TEC™ has been proven to be considerably more cost effective than any other treatment philosophy | Between 30% and 50% more expensive than treating with PROE-TEC™ | Not known but as this is not a typical philosophy for these structures, it is assumed it is prohibitively expensive |
